KAISERIN THEOPHANU: BEGEGNUNG DES OSTENS UND WESTENS UM DIE WENDE DES ERSTEN JAHRTAUSENDS -- GEDENKSCHRIFT DES KOLNER SCHNUTGEN-MUSEUMS ZUM 1000. TODESJAHR DER KAISERIN (Empress Theophanu: Meeting of East and West at the Turn of the First Millennium -- Commemorative Publication of the Cologne Schnutgen-Museum on the 1000th Anniversary of the Empress's Death). Ed. by Anton von Euw and Peter Schreiner. Schnutgen-Museum, Cologne, 1991. Two volumes. Vol. 1: 422 pp. with 215 ills. (75 col.). Vol. 2: 436 pp. with 203 ills. (69 col.). 31 x 23 cm. In German.
Planned to accompany an ambitious exhibition only a portion of which was ultimately mounted (Vor dem Jahr 1000: Abendlandische Buchkunst zur Zeit der Kaiserin Theophanu, Worldwide 23175), this impressive publication features more than 50 scholarly essays thoroughly documenting the historical, religious and artistic context of the life of Byzantine-born German empress Theophanu and the impact of her reign (972-991) on Western European culture. The first volume focuses on 10th-century Cologne, including discussions of religious traditions and reforms, developments in architecture and sculpture, and the city's emergence as a center of manuscript production. The character and influence of Byzantine culture in the Ottonian era and the life and legacy of Theophanu are extensively analyzed in the second volume.
