MAX ERNST: DAS RENDEZVOUS DER FREUNDE (Max Ernst: Au rendez-vous des amis). Museum Ludwig, Cologne, 1991. 354 pp. with 352 ills. (62 col., one foldout). 27 x 21 cm. In German.
Taking as a point of departure an evocative group portrait (1922) by Ernst depicting such pioneers of Surrealism as Breton, Eluard, Aragon, Arp and Peret (as well as Raphael and Dostoyevsky), this scholarly catalogue explores Ernst's role in the birth of the Surrealist movement through a presentation of 70 of his early works of the 1910s and 20s along with some 60 additional pieces by de Chirico, Picabia, Man Ray, Dali and others. Provides profiles of the 17 individuals portrayed in the featured painting and eight well-illustrated essays addressing the imagery and technical production of the work and Ernst's wide-ranging involvement in Dada and Surrealist activities.
