PAINTERS OF A NEW CENTURY: THE EIGHT & AMERICAN ART. Elizabeth Milroy and Gwendolyn Owens. Milwaukee Art Museum, 1991. 200 pp. with 112 ills. (53 col.). 24 x 28 cm. LC 91-4955 ISBN 0944110088 In English.
A significant reappraisal of the influence of a loosely knit group formed by eight progressive American realists in 1907, this catalogue illustrates more than 90 paintings, watercolors and pastels by Robert Henri, George Luks, William Glackens, John Sloan, Arthur B. Davies, Maurice Prendergast, Ernest Lawson and Everett Shinn, who together advanced independent exhibitions in opposition to the exclusionary juried shows then sponsored by the National Academy of Design. Features short biographical texts along with three scholarly essays that examine the conservative artistic climate in early 20th-century America; the history of New York's Macbeth Galleries, which in 1908 mounted The Eight's first and only exhibition; the painters' involvement in the 1913 Armory Show; and their pivotal role in altering the traditional relationship between the artist and the viewing public.
