FROM GAINSBOROUGH TO CONSTABLE: THE EMERGENCE OF NATURALISM IN BRITISH LANDSCAPE PAINTING, 1750-1810. Gainsborough's House, Sudbury, 1991. 94 pp. with 80 ills. (8 col.). 27 x 21 cm. LC 91-219273 ISBN 094651111X In English.
Exploring Constable's naturalistic oeuvre in the context of late 18th-century English landscape traditions, this scholarly catalogue documents 22 paintings, drawings and watercolors by the artist (1776-1837) along with 52 works by such contemporaries and predecessors as Gainsborough, Sandby, Cozens and Turner. Illustrations and individual descriptions of the featured works (many of them rarely or never before exhibited) are prefaced by two essays which evaluate Constable's stylistic innovations as a reflection of the natural evolution of British landscape painting and closely examine early influences on his artistic development.
