A student of Malevich and an active member of Russian avant-garde groups in the 1920s, Latvian-born Constructivist Klucis (1895-1944) was especially prolific as a designer of political posters, kiosks and monumental photomontages for public sites. The first extensive study of the artist's career, this scholarly catalogue documents more than 200 works dating from 1918 to 1937 and features numerous reprinted texts by Klucis as well as eleven essays discussing such topics as his links to Pevsner and Gabo, the functional and visionary qualities of his constructions, the political and artistic dimensions of his graphic designs, and the influence of Latvian traditions on his work.
