Marking the 400th anniversary of the death of Basilius Amerbach (1533-1591), an important collector in Renaissance Basel whose holdings formed the basis of the city's pioneering public collection in 1661, the exhibition documented in this five-volume catalogue featured representative works of the 15th and 16th centuries from the Amerbach holdings. Concise essays along with archival materials relating to Amerbach's life and to the history of his collection accompany illustrations and scholarly notes on more than 50 paintings (among them 15 works by Hans Holbein the Younger and several by his brother Ambrosius); 140 drawings by the Holbeins, Schongauer, Durer, Niklaus Manuel Deutsch and other artists; some 100 decorative designs for silver and gold objects; and a diverse array of coins, furniture, reliefs and figurines.
