Published to accompany the first major American exhibition to focus on the artistic legacy of Catherine the Great, this well-illustrated catalogue presents an array of some 200 decorative art objects (jewelry, costumes, boxes and chalices in gold, porcelain figurines and dinnerware, and gilded and inlaid furniture) as well as portrait paintings and busts, topographical prints and literary manuscripts. A biographical essay provides an overview of Catherine's life and her reign (1762-1796) while six additional texts by Russian scholars summarize the influence of her patronage in the areas of the fine and applied arts, architecture, science and literature. All references to the exhibition have been deleted from the hardcover edition of the catalogue.
