A thorough study of the achievements and influence of Russian painter-composer Mikhail Matiushin (1861-1934) and the experimental group he founded with his wife Elena Guro, this catalogue presents 23 chromatic paintings and drawings by the artist dating from 1904 to 1925, a series of color charts he produced in conjunction with his research at Leningrad's State Institute for Artistic Culture (GINCHUK), and some 40 works by Guro, the Enders, Malevich, Tatlin and other artists of the period. A selection of Matiushin's theoretical writings supplements eight scholarly essays, which include discussions of the emphasis on natural science and visual perception that distinguished the artist's organic approach from Cubist, Suprematist and Constructivist aesthetics and a description of the investigations conducted at the Institute.
