Illuminating avant-garde trends in new architecture and design in Austria, this catalogue presents photographs, drawings and models illustrating architectural projects by Coop Himmelblau, Hans Hollein, Gustav Peichl, Gunther Domenig and Heinz Tesar, along with examples of furniture, jewelry and industrial products created by ten designers (including several of the architects). Two scholarly essays discuss the approaches of the five featured firms in the context of the evolution of Austrian architecture since the turn of the century, and examine the diversity and inventiveness of recent Austrian design with reference to Biedermeier and Wiener Werkstatte traditions.
