Reexamining the wide-ranging oeuvre of German artist Dexel (1890-1973), a painter and designer closely associated with the Bauhaus during the 1920s, this catalogue documents an exhibition of more than 100 paintings, drawings and watercolors illustrating Dexel's role as a pioneer in Concrete art in Germany as well as scores of his designs for advertising displays, street signs, exhibition posters and books. Eight essays discuss the synthesis of fine and applied arts central to Dexel's work and review his achievements as a painter, typographer, stage designer and teacher.
