OP AD REINHARDT. Museum of Modern Art, New York, 1991. Organized in association with Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. Published in association with Rizzoli International Publications, Inc., New York. 144 pp. with 118 ills. (94 col.). 32 x 24 cm. LC 90-50800 ISBN 0847813363 In English.
The first full retrospective of the work of American abstract painter Reinhardt (1913-1967) is documented in this well-illustrated catalogue of some 90 paintings, gouaches and collages, highlighting the artist's postwar geometric abstractions and particularly the virtually monochromatic and "all black" canvases of the late 50s and early 60s which exemplify the philosophical principles underlying his oeuvre. A lengthy critical essay provides a thorough analysis of the deliberate nature of Reinhardt's stylistic progression and notes the independence of his position with respect to Minimalism and Conceptualism, movements which strongly reflect his influence. Several of Reinhardt's theoretical texts are also included, offering insight into his iconoclastic views of art and the art world.
