OP SHIGEKO KUBOTA: VIDEO SCULPTURE. Ed. by Mary Jane Jacob. American Museum of the Moving Image, Astoria, 1991. Distributed by University of Washington Press, Seattle. 96 pp. with 148 ills. (94 col.). 30 x 23 cm. LC 91-10609 ISBN 0295971312 In English.
Provides the first substantial survey of the innovative oeuvre of Japanese-born New York artist Kubota (b. 1937), a pioneering figure in video art since 1970 whose installations of highly manipulated video images presented in often abstract sculptural forms have been strongly influenced by Duchamp and Fluxus artists. Including four critical essays discussing the artist's career, her techniques and her exploration of issues related to gender and culture, the catalogue features a well-illustrated checklist of works from 1968 to 1991 which encompasses a catalogue raisonne (augmented with Kubota's commentaries) of her video sculpture and tapes.
