Striking full-page plates showcase 48 Suprematist-inspired stage and costume designs created between 1916 and 1921 by Russian avant-garde artist Exter (1882-1949) for Aleksandr Tairov's famous Moscow theater, as well as eleven paintings by the artist and some 30 contemporaneous theater designs by Popova, Vesnin, the Stenbergs and others. Essays on Exter's career, her synthesis of Futurist, Cubist and Constructivist aesthetics, and the history of the Chamber Theater are supplemented with an anthology of critical texts dating from 1919 to 1985.
