GIOVANNI SEGANTINI, 1858-1899. Kunsthaus, Zurich, 1990. 266 pp. (one foldout) with 217 ills. (118 col.). 28 x 29 cm. LC 91-157587 In German.
A significant review of the life and work of a prominent Italian painter best known for his impressionistic Alpine landscapes and depictions of rural life, this catalogue features fine reproductions of some 70 paintings and more than 50 pastels, watercolors and drawings illustrating all phases of Segantini's stylistic development, from an early Millet-influenced realism to the pantheistic symbolism of his late allegories. An illustrated biographical chronology, a fragmentary autobiography and an anthology of turn-of-the-century writings on the artist supplement four essays discussing Segantini's achievements in the context of Lombard traditions and the Divisionist movement, the images of motherhood, death and religion in his paintings, the reception of his work by critics and other artists, and the history of the Segantini Museum in St. Moritz.
