BILDLICHT: MALEREI ZWISCHEN MATERIAL UND IMMATERIALITAT (Image and Light: Painting between the Material and the Immaterial). Wolfgang Drechsler et al. Museum des 20. Jahrhunderts, Vienna, 1991. Organized (in association with Museum moderner Kunst, Vienna) and published by Wiener Festwochen, Vienna. 352 pp. with 241 ills. (136 col.). 24 x 17 cm. LC 91-163878 ISBN 3203511339 In German.
Constituting a rigorous review of non-representational postwar painting, this catalogue examines the origins and continued vitality of two divergent approaches to the medium: the dematerialization of painting reflected in the works of such artists as Reinhardt, Rothko, Flavin and the Minimalists; and the emphasized physicality of painting, as represented in the art of Fontana, Tapies, Manzoni and the Nouveaux Realistes. Illustrations of immaterial and sculptural paintings by an international array of both contemporary artists and seminal figures in movements of the 1950s and 60s accompany six analytical essays and an exhaustive discussion of postwar strategies in abstraction in the context of earlier trends.
