JEAN DUBUFFET: LES DERNIERES ANNEES (Jean Dubuffet: The Late Years). Galerie nationale du Jeu de Paume, Paris, 1991. Published in association with Reunion des musees nationaux, Paris. 304 pp. with 252 ills. (147 col.). 27 x 23 cm. ISBN 2908901005 In French; one essay, excerpts from letters by the artist, biographical chronology and twelve texts (most reprinted) also in English.
Accompanying the first show at the Jeu de Paume since its conversion to a gallery for contemporary art, this catalogue documents an international loan exhibition of some 200 paintings and drawings produced from 1973 to 1984 by French artist Dubuffet (1901-1985), illustrating his last refinements of the inventive gestural style of figurative abstraction he pioneered in the late 1940s. Eight critical texts and four writings by Dubuffet discuss the principal themes and individual series represented in his late work, while numerous excerpts from the artist's letters illuminate his career-long promotion of Art Brut techniques and his aggressive artistic philosophy.
