British Museum, London, 1991. Published in association with Leonardo-De Luca Editori, Rome. 336 pp. with 300 ills. (40 col.). 28 x 22 cm. ISBN 0714116432 In English.
Marking the 400th anniversary of the artist's birth, this scholarly catalogue presents illustrations and thorough analyses of more than 200 works by Guercino (1591-1666) selected primarily from British public collections, and also documents the Museum's holdings of some 100 additional drawings (many of them previously unpublished) by the Italian Baroque master, his school and his followers. A substantial introductory text assessing the importance of the medium in Guercino's oeuvre and chronicling the formation in Britain of significant collections of his drawings is supplemented by three brief essays discussing the artist's studies for history paintings, his landscape drawings, and his genre scenes, capricci and caricatures.
