AFRICA EXPLORES: 20TH CENTURY AFRICAN ART. Susan Vogel et al. Center for African Art and New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York, 1991. Organized by Center for African Art, New York. Published in association with Prestel-Verlag, Munich. 300 pp. with 402 ills. (222 col.). 31 x 24 cm. LC 90-26683 ISBN 0945802099 In English.
This lavishly illustrated and enlightening examination of 20th-century African art presents more than 130 paintings, sculptures and mixed-media works, emphasizing contemporary creations which reflect both the continuing vitality of traditional motifs and the inventive appropriation of Western materials and modes of expression. Two introductory texts outline the main forms of modern sub-Saharan art and delineate the differences between African and Western views of creativity, while five chapters comprising eleven substantial essays discuss the thematically arranged works: traditional art (chiefly wooden masks and figures); new functional art (diverse communal objects in non-traditional materials); urban art (commercial paintings and works incorporating popular imagery); international art (paintings and assemblages by academically trained artists); and extinct art forms, which remain a strong source of inspiration for contemporary artists.
