Postmodern applications of the principles of "straight" photography are surveyed in this well-illustrated catalogue of works produced over the past decade by nine noted artists, whose serial images in repetitive formats represent extended portraits of such diverse classes of subject matter as gas stations, water towers, urban vistas, orchards and human faces. Three essays discuss the individual concerns and shared methodology of the artists, evaluate the varying significance of their emphasis on the primacy of the subject, and explore the rigorous directness and frontality of their images in relation to the work of such photographers as Eugene Atget and Walker Evans.
