Illustrating more than 125 collage paintings and sculptural assemblages, this catalogue documents the final stage in the evolution of a unique body of works created by Robert Rauschenberg (b. 1925) over the course of the five-year international tour of a continually expanding exhibition, organized by the artist to promote intercultural exchange and understanding. Individual sections survey the works Rauschenberg produced in each host nation to celebrate its culture as he accompanied the show to eleven countries (among them Mexico, Venezuela, Tibet, Japan, the Soviet Union and Malaysia). Includes a lengthy and insightful interview with the artist, an introductory stylistic and thematic assessment of the exhibited pieces and a detailed chronology of the project.
