JOHN CHAMBERLAIN. Staatliche Kunsthalle, Baden-Baden, 1991. Published in association with Edition Cantz, Stuttgart. 246 pp. with 125 ills. (117 col.). 31 x 24 cm. ISBN 3893222391 Bilingual in German and English.
A significant review not only of the sculptural oeuvre of American artist Chamberlain (b. 1927) but also of his lesser-known work in photography and film, this well-illustrated catalogue presents a selection of 45 free-standing and wall-mounted assemblages of colorful crushed sheet metal and automobile parts created from 1954 to 1991; a series of 45 recent color photographs comprising distorted images produced with a hand-held camera; and still frames (accompanied by the shooting script) from the artist's 1968 avant-garde film The Secret Life of Hernando Cortez. Two critical essays and a reprinted text (1964) by Donald Judd examine the development of Chamberlain's sculptural style and his experimental approach to photography and film.
