ARSHILE GORKY: OEUVRES SUR PAPIER, 1929-1947/ARBEITEN AUF PAPIER, 1929-1947 (Arshile Gorky: Works on Paper, 1929-1947). Erika Billeter et al. Musee cantonal des Beaux-Arts, Lausanne, 1990. 202 pp. with 142 ills. (36 col.). 28 x 24 cm. Bilingual in French and German.
Reappraises the enigmatic relationship of Armenian-American artist Gorky (ca. 1905-1948) to the Surrealist movement in Europe and the rise of Abstract Expressionism in the United States, presenting full-page reproductions of 117 drawings (many previously unpublished) which reflect his explorations of a figurative mode of Surrealism in the 1930s and the biomorphic style of abstraction he pioneered in the 40s. Reprinted texts by Andre Breton (1945) and Frank O'Hara (1962) highlighting the dualistic interpretation of Gorky's role in modern art precede four critical essays discussing his pivotal achievements and evaluating the development of his independent oeuvre from art historical, cultural and psychological perspectives.
