Documents an exhibition encompassing masterworks by Delacroix, Corot, Jongkind, Manet, Sisley, Monet and other major figures in the evolution of 19th-century French painting, selected from the extensive donations made to the Louvre and the Bibliotheque nationale by French art historian, painter and collector Etienne Moreau-Nelaton (1859-1927). Highlighting all 119 paintings to enter the two institutions through Moreau-Nelaton's gifts and some 400 drawings and prints from among the several thousand he donated, the catalogue includes scholarly entries for the exhibited works, introductory texts discussing the character and special strengths of the Moreau-Nelaton family collection, and seven essays describing the collector's career, his intellectual pursuits and his activities as an artist.
