Featuring full-page color reproductions and lengthy individual discussions of 33 paintings by Utrecht-born artist De Heem (1606-1683/84), this scholarly catalogue reviews the oeuvre of a central figure in 17th-century Netherlandish still-life painting and documents his influence through a presentation of 19 canvases by eleven other painters, among them his sons Cornelis and Jan Jansz. and his grandson David Cornelisz. Includes a biographical essay on the De Heem family of artists, a summary of archival materials, and a substantial essay which examines De Heem's career in Antwerp, the style and iconography of his opulent banquet and floral compositions, his synthesis of Dutch and Flemish still-life traditions, and his influence on later painters.
