KARL HUBBUCH: DER ZEICHNER (Karl Hubbuch: The Draftsman). Wolfgang Hartmann. Wilhelm-Busch-Museum, Hannover, 1991. Published by Verlag Gerd Hatje, Stuttgart. 244 pp. with 240 ills. (46 col.). 29 x 25 cm. LC 91-161747 ISBN 3775703209 In German.
The first major survey of the drawings of German artist Hubbuch (1891-1979), a principal figure in the Neue Sachlichkeit movement of the 1920s and 30s, this catalogue features excellent reproductions of more than 200 works (many of them previously unpublished) spanning five decades of the artist's career. An introductory essay discusses Hubbuch's techniques and imagery and his stylistic evolution as reflected in the drawings, which range from figure sketches in the manner of Dix and Grosz to meticulous landscapes and expressively rendered views of street scenes in Rome and Paris.
