OTTO STEINERT UND SCHULER: FOTOGRAFIE UND AUSBILDUNG, 1948 BIS 1978/OTTO STEINERT AND HIS STUDENTS: PHOTOGRAPHY AND EDUCATION, 1948 TO 1978. Museum Folkwang, Essen, 1990. 192 pp. with 220 ills. 28 x 21 cm. Bilingual in German and English.
An important influence on postwar German photography, Steinert (1915-1978) organized pioneering exhibitions and served as a leading educator, introducing to several generations of students a fundamentally artistic approach to the medium based on his concept of "subjective photography": the production of technically refined images expressing individualistic aesthetic visions. Documenting Steinert's legacy through a presentation of some 140 experimental, still-life, portrait and photojournalistic works by dozens of his students, this catalogue includes a reprinted statement by the educator and three detailed essays discussing his teaching philosophy and techniques in the context of traditional approaches to the training of photographers in Germany.
