This retrospective survey documents some 150 sculptures and drawings created from the 1940s to the late 80s by French-born American artist Bourgeois (b. 1911), highlighting anthropomorphic and biomorphic sculptural works (variously carved, assembled or molded from stone, bronze, plaster, plastic and wood) distinguished by their multi-faceted psychological themes and complex sexual imagery. Six critical essays discuss the self-referential nature of Bourgeois's oeuvre and its independence from the mainstreams of modernism, exploring her inventive manipulation of symbols and materials and the diverse influences on her work.
