Documenting an international loan exhibition reuniting works once part of a great medieval treasury of liturgical and decorative art, this scholarly catalogue showcases some 80 opulent pieces dating from the 7th through the 15th century, including elaborately worked objects in gold and silver, carved gemstones, richly embellished bookbindings, ivories, cameos, chalices, relics and other diverse works. Presents four short introductory texts and five essays tracing the treasury's history from the time of Dagobert to its dispersal during the Revolution and discussing missing objects identifiable from numerous historical documents and inventories. Very good reproductions and lengthy commentaries (accompanied by numerous small reference illustrations) fully document the exhibited pieces.
