Presenting mostly small-scale, informal compositions by French Romantic painter Delacroix which often mirror the heroic themes of his monumental canvases, this catalogue concisely documents more than 100 works from museum and private collections in the United States and Canada, including preparatory drawings, prints illustrating literary works, anatomical and figure studies, landscape sketches from the artist's notebooks and a small selection of pastels and oil paintings. Two scholarly essays (one reprinted) examine the exhibited works in the context of Delacroix's oeuvre and chronicle the course of his career and personal life.
