This scholarly study of the brief but pivotal history of the Qin dynasty showcases a selection of life-sized terra-cotta soldiers and horses excavated from the vast burial site of Qin Shihuang (259-210 B.C.) as well as nearly 80 contemporaneous bronze and ceramic vessels, weapons, architectural fragments and other objects. Fine reproductions of the featured artifacts are accompanied by extensive analyses and numerous reference illustrations, and ten essays discuss Qin religious and political structures, the period's material culture, the origin of the Great Wall, and the creation and significance of the huge terra-cotta army.
