NEW WORKS FOR DIFFERENT PLACES: DERRY, GLASGOW, NEWCASTLE, PLYMOUTH -- TSWA FOUR CITIES PROJECT. Orchard Gallery, Derry; Third Eye Centre, Glasgow; Projects UK, Newcastle; and Plymouth Arts Centre, 1990. Organized in association with and published by TSWA Ltd, London. 176 pp. with 134 ills. (48 col.). 30 x 22 cm. In English.
Showcases a diverse group of avant-garde, chiefly temporary public installations by 26 prominent international artists (among them Dennis Adams, Chris Burden, Richard Deacon, Ian Hamilton Finlay, Ilya Kabakov, Nancy Spero and Rosemarie Trockel), who were commissioned to create works in four cities for unconventional locations including an air raid shelter, an abandoned commercial building and a moored World War II destroyer. Featuring excellent pictorial documentation of the 21 realized projects and five unrealized proposals, the catalogue includes a description of the organizers' purposes in promoting non-traditional forms of public art, statements by the artists, a reprinted essay evaluating the controversies often surrounding public art works, and the texts of three discussions of related issues by British, Canadian and American critics and arts administrators.
