GIORGIO DE CHIRICO, 1920-1950. Ed. by Massimo Di Carlo et al. Borghi & Co., New York, 1990. Organized in association with Istituto Internazionale di Cultura, Rome, and Interart Cultural Exchange, New York. Published by Electa, Milan. 166 pp. with 72 ills. (62 col.). 25 x 23 cm. ISBN 8843534033 Bilingual in Italian and English.
Full-page reproductions and individual commentaries document a selection of 62 paintings by de Chirico (1888-1978), primarily illustrating the artist's post-Metaphysical concerns while reviewing the diverse themes he explored during the central decades of his career (still lifes, self-portraits, studies of mannequins and gladiators, and equestrian subjects). Introductory essays discuss de Chirico's idiosyncratic position with respect to metaphysics, and comment on the difficulty of establishing a unified interpretation of his highly varied oeuvre.
