BERTRAND LAVIER. Centre Georges Pompidou, Musee national d'art moderne, Paris, 1991. Contemporains, 16. 128 pp. with 162 ills. (44 col.). 27 x 24 cm. LC 91-168859 ISBN 2858505985 In French.
Surveying the eclectic and problematic oeuvre of a leading member of the French avant garde, this catalogue presents some 50 works created over the past decade by Lavier (b. 1949), who integrates elements of sculpture and painting in installations that range from a plastic chair mounted on a refrigerator and a heavily overpainted but still functional piano to geometric relief paintings and projected images of famous modern art works. The artist's use of readymades, his frequently comic themes and the apparent disunity of his work are among the topics discussed in five essays, which are supplemented by an illustrated critical anthology.
