Features full-page reproductions of many rarely exhibited works from Soviet collections, presenting some 80 paintings and drawings produced by Chagall (1887-1985) in Russia from 1914 to 1922 as well as 96 etchings from the series he created (1923-1925) to illustrate Gogol's Dead Souls. In addition to a substantial discussion of the artist's early career and five other texts by Soviet, Swiss and French critics on such topics as the influence of his Hasidic background on his work and his experiences as an art instructor in Vitebsk, the catalogue includes two illustrated essays on the removal and conservation of six enormous mural canvases painted by Chagall for the Theater of Jewish Art in Moscow.
