Accompanying the first exhibition to comprehensively review northern Italian fine and applied arts of the 18th century, this massive catalogue highlights genre and religious canvases by such painters as Giacomo Ceruti, Antonio Cifrondi and Giuseppe Ghislandi, whose works (privately commissioned and largely reflecting regional thematic and stylistic concerns) have remained little known outside Italy. Scholarly documentation of more than 400 paintings, drawings and sculptures and of numerous examples of the region's architecture and decorative arts are supplemented by several general essays, some 20 discussions of the individual art forms represented, and biographies of many of the artists.
