Documenting 100 paintings, costumes, accessories and other objects from the Palace Museum in Beijing, this catalogue includes detailed individual discussions of the works and five essays examining the history, court life and painting of the Qing dynasty, the imperial tradition in China, and the meaning of the motifs embodied in many of the ceremonial pieces. Two of the essays are reprinted translations (one in revised form) from Palastmuseum Peking: Schatze aus der Verbotenen Stadt (Worldwide 19900), the catalogue of a 1985 exhibition in Berlin.
