Presenting the results of recent archaeological study and interdisciplinary research, this scholarly catalogue examines the history and significance of the French Carolingian monastery of Saint-Germain in Auxerre, an important pilgrimage site and a center of learning linked with other intellectual enclaves throughout medieval Europe. Including illustrations of manuscript leaves, reliquaries and other artifacts as well as numerous architectural photographs and elevations, the volume offers an array of texts tracing the early history and architectural evolution of the abbey, analyzing the character of individual manuscripts produced in its scriptorium in the context of intellectual movements and artistic interchanges of the period, and documenting associated relics, architectural and textile fragments, and the murals and inscriptions of the abbey's crypts.
