Surveying images from numerous series of works produced by major American photographer Baltz (b. 1945) from 1967 to 1990, this catalogue includes excellent reproductions of photographs ranging from panoramic views of tract homes and landfills to close-up studies of the debris of construction sites on the margins of urban landscapes in the West. Twelve diverse texts (some reprinted) discuss Baltz's sophisticated techniques, his chiefly non-political approach to his subjects, and the significance of his work in the context of contemporary topographical photography.
