Prepared for a major exhibition which was ultimately cancelled due to the Persian Gulf crisis (and replaced in the Petit Palais schedule by Les vanites; see 22966 below), this substantial catalogue documents nearly 700 works including prehistoric stelae; numerous Punic and Roman ceramics, sculptures, architectural fragments and coins representing the Classical period; and illuminated manuscripts, mosaics, astronomical instruments, wood carvings, jewelry and other objects extensively illustrating the country's Islamic heritage. Individual commentaries accompany full-page color reproductions of more than 100 works (drawn mainly from Moroccan collections), and some 20 essays address historical topics and the diverse art forms represented.
