KEN LUM. Winnipeg Art Gallery, 1990. Published in association with Witte de With, Center for Contemporary Art, Rotterdam. 84 pp. with 32 ills. (20 col.). 28 x 22 cm. ISBN 0889151555 Bilingual in English and Dutch.
Surveys the diverse works produced since 1984 by Canadian artist Lum (b. 1956), presenting examples of his early furniture installations, his banners and paintings incorporating texts in imaginary languages, and his recent photographic works which, combining portraits with commercial logos and text, simulate advertising billboards and subtly address issues related to ethnocentrism, multi-culturalism and the family. Including a brief autobiographical statement, the catalogue features a discussion of media-related artifice in Lum's work and a lengthy text by his mentor and associate Jeff Wall, who links the artist's oddly contemplative oeuvre to Minimalism, Conceptualism and Pop Art.
