Presents an informative survey of paintings by some 40 contemporaries of Van Gogh, including canvases by established figures of the Hague School such as Jozef Israels and Jacob Maris but emphasizing the work of younger artists (among them Breitner, Robertson, Toorop and Thorn Prikker) who contributed to the rapid transformation of Dutch art during the period. Four essays discussing the artistic and cultural milieu of late-19th-century Holland, its art market, and the views of Dutch critics are supplemented by biographies of the artists and substantial individual commentaries on nearly 100 paintings, including 17 works by Van Gogh.
