OP ART FROM SOUTH AFRICA. Museum of Modern Art, Oxford, 1990. Organized in association with Zabalaza Festival, London. Distributed by Thames and Hudson Ltd, London. 96 pp. with 136 ills. (62 col.). 22 x 26 cm. ISBN 0905836715 In English.
Surveys recent works in a wide range of media by both academically trained and self-taught South African artists, providing small reproductions of some 100 predominantly representational paintings, drawings, prints and sculptures (many addressing social and political issues) along with a selection of objects crafted by collective groups. Among the enlightening texts is an African National Congress seminar paper reassessing the "function" of art in South Africa, four reprinted articles written in response to its call for an autonomous, depoliticized artistic climate, and three essays evaluating the complex transitional character of current art in the country.
