With an emphasis on works from the 17th-century "Golden Age" of Netherlandish flower painting, this catalogue presents good reproductions and detailed stylistic, iconographic and botanical examinations of 75 paintings, prints, drawings and book illustrations by such artists as Jan Brueghel the Elder, Savery, De Heem and Van der Ast as well as 24 works by Van Gogh, Van Dongen, Mondrian and other painters who continued the floral still-life tradition into the early 20th century. A lengthy introductory essay traces the evolution of the genre in the Netherlands and discusses the character and origins of the complex floral symbolism reflected in the featured works.
