Examines the careers and achievements of Theodore Clement Steele (1847-1926), J. Ottis Adams (1851-1927), William Forsyth (1854-1935) and six other Indiana realists who, following their studies in Munich, gained substantial recognition as landscape painters in the United States despite their regional isolation. Excellent reproductions and informative commentaries document 96 paintings and 20 drawings which illustrate the artists' translation of European landscape traditions into distinctly American idioms.
