Thoroughly documents 95 paintings and 185 drawings, oil sketches, watercolors and prints by Blechen (1798-1840), providing a rich overview of the German artist's career and his significant oeuvre, which reflects Romantic traditions while heralding the rise of naturalism in 19th-century landscape painting. In addition to four introductory essays and detailed commentaries on the exhibited pieces, the catalogue presents some 180 works by other artists of the period (including Friedrich, Schinkel, Menzel, Corot, Delacroix and Turner) which clarify the special character of Blechen's achievements.
