A.C. LENS, 1739-1822. Alain Jacobs. Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten, Antwerp, 1989. Organized in association with Association du Patrimoine Artistique, Brussels. 280 pp. with 160 ills. (16 col.). 25 x 21 cm. Bilingual in Dutch and French (brief introductions in Dutch or French only).
Documenting the first significant survey of the neglected oeuvre of Flemish history painter Andre Corneille Lens, this scholarly catalogue provides a detailed study of the artist's role in introducing a Roman style of Neo-Classicism to Belgium following his sojourn in Italy in the 1760s. The extensive text is supplemented by lengthy commentaries on 87 paintings and drawings which clarify issues related to the artist's style and the chronology of his works, which have often been confused with those of Angelica Kauffmann.
