Presents illustrations of some 85 paintings and 115 drawings as well as smaller selections of prints and sculptures, offering a major survey of the distinctive achievements of Andre Masson (1896-1987), a leading independent figure among French Surrealists whose techniques of automatic painting and drawing inspired Gorky, Pollock and later Abstract Expressionists. Twelve critical texts discuss such topics as the psychological character of Masson's themes and his use of cosmic and erotic symbolism, his wide-ranging artistic production (which encompassed literary illustrations and set designs) and his inventive approaches to painting and drawing.
