Celebrating the ideals and traditions of athletic competition symbolized by the Olympic Games, this catalogue documents 235 vases, sculptures, reliefs and other works (drawn mainly from Greek public collections) which illustrate the character and the integral importance of athletics in ancient Greek civilization. Eight essays, focused chiefly on the history of organized athletic training and on religious festivals and their associated competitions in Athens, Olympia, Delphi, Nemea and the Isthmus of Corinth, preface fine color reproductions of the exhibited works, each of which is accompanied by a substantial descriptive commentary.
