VISIONING TECHNOLOGIES: THE ARCHITECTURES OF SIGHT. Graham Cairns. Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group, New York, 2016. An Ashgate Book. 200 pp. ISBN 9781472454966 In English.
Due date: December 2016. Publisher's description: Focusing on Europe and North America and covering a time frame extending from the C15th to the present day, this book examines how the historic development of 'visioning technologies' such as perspective, telescopes, photography, film, digital animation, and virtual reality has influenced architectural design and architectural theory. Its arguments are presented through a series of chapters by different expert authors dealing chronologically with these technologies. It argues that, while today's 'visioning technologies' (virtual reality, photorealistic digital imaging and the real time generative screen images of parametricism) claim to present us with architectural forms and spaces like never before, these technologies form part of a very specific practical and theoretical history revolving around the technological ability to reproduce the 'reality' of architectural space, and then to transform it. Through its exploration of this new terrain, the volume suggests that today's most radical architectural visualising techniques and technologies are indeed changing the nature of architecture. However, they follow a template of development and influence on design that can be traced historically through all other 'technologies of sight'.
