PAUL-CESAR HELLEU. Ed. by Frederique de Watrigant. Somogy editions d'art, Paris, 2014. Published in association with Les amis de Paul-Cesar Helleu, Paris. 304 pp. with 344 ills. (273 col.). 31 x 24 cm. ISBN 9782757208120 In English.
Publisher's description: A virtuoso of drawing and a master of drypoint, Paul-Cesar Helleu was also an exceptional painter whose work was very much part of the Impressionist movement. Although today he is little known to the public at large, during his lifetime he was quite famous on both sides of the Atlantic. In 1928, Jacques Emile Blanche wrote of him: "He was the most talented of all. Manet, Monet, Renoir were all convinced of this, just like we were." And yet his name appears virtually nowhere in the history of Impressionist painting. Thanks to firsthand accounts left by his daughter and research that has been carried out over the past fifteen years, we have been able to follow in the footsteps of this unique painter and bring together the important pieces of his body of work. This richly illustrated volume, which will be followed by a catalogue raisonne currently in preparation, takes us on a journey into Helleu's world, at the height of a period populated by characters dear to Marcel Proust. With contributions by: Paulette Howard-Johnston, Xavier Narbaefts, Sylvie Collignon, Francesca Dini, Henrik Harpsoe, Manon Hasselmann, Aurore Le Pogam-Laloy, Come Remy, Laure-Caroline Semmer.
